I would like to wish all of the moms (and grandmothers!) a wonderful Mother’s Day today! I hope you enjoy the gifts your child prepared for you. I was very pleased with how the students’ plants and cards turned out! I saw some gorgeous creations and heartfelt messages! Enjoy your day.

Drumming Workshop- What a “hit!”

Today`s drumming workshop proved to be a fun, engaging activity for all the students. The children actively participated in a drum circle and demonstrated a good understanding of the proper technique of playing the djembe, using correct posture and hand positions to vary the sound. I was very impressed how the boys and girls were able to keep a consistent tempo and play various rhythms. Super cool stuff!

Science Rocks!

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The students had a blast participating in the Scientists in School workshop Friday afternoon. The children learned about Animal Coverings and Adaptations. Students stepped into the physics lab and investigated the insulating properties of a variety of animal coverings and discovered some of the amazing adaptations animals use to survive seasonal changes. They also had an exciting opportunity and used a microscope to explore some of nature’s most unusual coverings and got their hands on real quills, shells, scales, feathers and fur!

Thank you to all the parent volunteers who generously took time out of their busy schedules to help with the workshop. Without parent volunteers, such activities could not be possible. I really appreciate your help!

Cleaning the Capital initiative

GLAD Cleaning the Capital logo, in colour.

What is Cleaning the Capital?

The GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign is a citywide cleanup that occurs in the spring and fall of every year. Residents come together as a community and combine efforts to make our city clean and green. I’ve registered my class to clean up the yard here at WEJ! Students will use a cleanup kit (gloves, yard waste bags, garbage bags etc.) to assist them with this important task. We will be heading out soon to begin our clean up!

2017 marks the 24th year of the GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign! The annual cleanup campaign first began in 1994 as a springtime cleanup. In 2006, due to the spring campaign’s overwhelming success an annual fall cleanup was added. Since 1994, over one million volunteers have participated in over 17,000 cleanup projects throughout the city. As a result, an estimated 930,000 kilograms of waste has been removed from our public spaces.

The GLAD Cleaning the Capital campaign is not-for-profit initiative and relies heavily on the generosity of sponsors who offer financial and in-kind support. Cleaning the Capital is an exciting way for residents to foster community pride by cleaning up their parks, bus stops, woodlots, ravines, shorelines and pathways, while enjoying the outdoors and ensuring that Ottawa stays clean, green, and graffiti and litter-free.

Students are excited to do their part in keeping our school clean. They will enjoy the outdoors, get exercise and understand what it feels like to take personal responsibility for the environment around them. Ask your child about it when they come home from school today.

Dear Parents,

The children were over the moon happy to share their learning at our Poetry Café. I could see how excited and proud the children were to share their poems with you. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to attend. It was a wonderful sight to see parents read with other children as well. Pictures will be posted soon for those of you who were unable to make it.

Kind Regards,

Ms. Gaffen
